Be prepared to provide them with financial information, such as your monthly income and expenses. Without this information, they usually will not help you. Stay in your home for now. You may not qualify for assistance if you abandon your property.

Another option is a short sale. In a short sale, the bank or mortgage lender agrees to discount the a loan balance. The homeowner sells the mortgaged property for less than the outstanding balance of the loan, and turns the proceeds of the sale to the lender. A short sale is typically faster and less expensive than a foreclosure.
